METAPHORICAL GARDENS
Don's metaphoric images and figures inhabit landscapes  worked into crisply defined form, using color, texture, and material to imply, hint, and suggest.
More often than not, the works express aspects of the human character through the exploration of the metaphors of language, myth, and the spiritual journeys of our own human condition.

Whether abstracted or representational, the work creates a context in which to focus our perceptions of the binding drama of human life.

Stone is usually the primary material Don uses for the major element in his work, although a diversity of other materials are used to contrast and complement the stone.
Each type of material is chosen for its unique qualities, and each quality adds a depth to the expression of the work.
Though working with the juxtapositions of a variety of materials, Don first and foremost considers himself  a carver.  In the process of  carving it is the material which is the genesis of all other considerations for the sculptor.
In other words, it all begins with the material.

One cannot help but be influenced by the arts and artists experienced in the journey through life.  Paying tribute or homage to those who work in other artforms — writers and composers, musicians and actors, and other visual artists — is a time-honored tradition.

One also cannot help but imagine what  the fertile back gardens of these cultivators might be like, or contain . . .
