This duck head was originally from an old working decoy.
The paint faded and peeled, an eye got lost, the body and the head got separated sometime over the years, and this head ended up in a box of trash with some broken old tools headed for the dumpster* when I, the pack-rat that I am, rescued it, and replaced the missing eye - with another fortuitous find.
The carving of this fragment is straightforward and clean, and the remaining traces of green paint and the putty around the base of the neck just emphasized the simple craftsmanship that went into making it. For years the head sat hanging above my workbench like some kind of trophy, but when I began doing CORNUCOPIA I knew it was an ideal focal element.
